Calculate your rising sign

The rising sign (Ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It changes roughly every two hours: the exact time matters as much as the date. Enter it and you get your rising sign with its meaning, plus your complete birth chart.

  • ✦Computed from astronomical ephemerides and the sidereal time of your birthplace: no approximate table.
  • ✦Daylight saving, wartime hours, historical time zones: all corrected automatically from the date and the city.
  • ✦You also get your Midheaven, your houses and all your planets: the Ascendant is only the front door.

What is the rising sign?

The rising sign, or Ascendant, is the point of the ecliptic that was rising in the east at the precise moment of your birth. It opens the 1st house and sets the tone of your chart: your appearance, your vitality, how you approach life and the first impression you leave. Many people recognise themselves more in their rising sign than in their Sun sign, especially in social settings.

It cycles through the twelve signs in twenty-four hours, so it changes sign roughly every two hours (less for the “fast” signs such as Pisces or Aries at European latitudes, more for Virgo or Libra). A half-hour error can be enough to tip it over: that is why the exact birth time, the one on the birth certificate, is essential.

How to find your exact birth time

It appears on your full birth certificate: ask the civil registry of your place of birth (in France, free online via service-public.fr; in the UK and US, the long-form certificate or hospital records). Family record books and health booklets often mention it too.

If the time cannot be found, calculate your chart without it: the Sun, the planets and most aspects stay correct; only the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are missing. An astrologer can also “rectify” the time from life events, during a consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my rising sign for free?

Enter your date, time and place of birth in the form above: the Ascendant is computed instantly from astronomical ephemerides and the sidereal time of your birthplace, then shown with its meaning and your whole birth chart.

Why is the birth time essential?

Because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours: the Earth rotates in twenty-four hours and brings the twelve signs across the horizon. Without the time, it cannot be determined with certainty.

I don’t know my birth time: what can I do?

Request a full copy of your birth certificate from the registry of your place of birth. Failing that, calculate your chart without the time: everything stays correct except the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses.

What is the difference between the Sun sign and the rising sign?

The Sun sign (your “sign”) is the Sun’s position on the day you were born: your core identity. The rising sign is the sign rising in the east at your birth time: your image, how you enter relationships, your body. The two combine, hence the 144 Sun–rising portraits.

Are the rising-sign tables found online reliable?

Rarely: they ignore your latitude, daylight saving time and the exact date within the sign. Near a sign boundary they are often wrong. An astronomical calculation like this one avoids those errors.
