Couple compatibility
Synastry: two charts, one relationship
Comparing two natal charts means understanding why you chose each other, where you understand one another instinctively, where you have to learn from each other, and what makes you last. Far beyond Sun signs.
Why synastry changes everything
Compatibility horoscopes compare two Sun signs. That is a start, but the Sun only describes conscious identity. In a couple, what plays out day to day is the Moon: emotional needs, security, tenderness. What attracts is the dialogue between Venus (the way of loving) and Mars (desire). What makes it last is Saturn. And what gives the feeling of having found someone familiar are the contacts to the Ascendant.
Synastry overlays the two natal charts and measures the angles that one person's planets form with the other's. A trine between one person's Moon and the other's Venus gives an immediate softness; a square between the two Mercuries explains recurring misunderstandings; a Venus–Mars conjunction tells of love at first sight. Every relationship has its own chart, unique, and that chart tells the truth of the bond.
A good synastry is not a synastry without tension. Couples that last combine harmonious aspects (comfort, understanding) and a few dynamic aspects (movement, growth). The study serves to name both: what you can lean on, and what the relationship asks you to learn.
What we read in a synastry
Attraction
Venus–Mars, Sun–Moon, contacts to the Ascendant: what drew you together and what keeps desire alive.
Emotional closeness
Moon–Moon, Moon–Venus: the way you reassure each other, and what hurts without meaning to.
Communication
Mercury facing Mercury and the Moon: how you talk to each other, and where misunderstandings arise.
Longevity
Saturn to the personal planets: commitment, loyalty, the framework that holds over time.
Intensity
Pluto to Venus or Mars: passion, fusion, mutual transformation, sometimes possessiveness.
Crossed houses
Where the other person's planets fall in your chart: the area of life he or she comes to awaken.

Frequently asked questions
What is synastry in astrology?
Synastry is the comparison of two natal charts: the two charts are overlaid and we study the aspects that one person's planets form with the other's. It describes the dynamic of a relationship: what attracts, what reassures, what rubs, what makes it last.
What is the difference between sign compatibility and synastry?
Sign compatibility only compares the two Suns: it is a first approach, useful but rough. Synastry compares every planet, the Ascendant and the houses: the Moon (needs), Venus (the way of loving), Mars (desire) and Saturn (commitment) often weigh more than the Sun.
What are the most important aspects in synastry?
Sun–Moon, Moon–Moon, Venus–Mars, Sun–Ascendant and Moon–Ascendant contacts for attraction and closeness; Mercury–Mercury and Mercury–Moon for communication; Saturn aspects to the personal planets for longevity; Venus–Pluto and Mars–Pluto for intensity.
Can a couple with many squares last?
Yes, and often very well: tensions are engines of growth. Couples with no friction at all get bored; those with too much wear themselves out. The ideal is a balance, and above all a few Saturn contacts that give the relationship a backbone.
Do you need both birth times?
It is preferable: without a time, you lose the Ascendants and the houses, but most planetary aspects remain valid. The free calculator also works with one or both times unknown.
