Method
How to read your birth chart
A chart is read in layers, from the most visible to the most subtle. Here is the seven-step method, the one every astrologer follows, to go from a list of positions to a portrait that holds together.
- 1
The Sun: who you are
The Sun's sign describes your core identity, your vitality, what you strive towards. Its house shows the area where you need to shine.

The Moon: what you need
The Moon is your emotional world, your security, your reflexes. It is often the key to intimate relationships and daily life.

The Ascendant: how you step into life
The sign rising at your birth describes your appearance, your first impression, the way you approach the world. Its ruler (the planet that governs that sign) is a major actor in your chart.

Dominants: the overall tone
Count your planets by element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and by modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Excess and lack say a lot: plenty of Fire means drive; little Earth means practicality to cultivate.

The personal planets in signs
Mercury (thinking), Venus (love, values) and Mars (action, desire): their signs describe the way you communicate, love and act. These are the most telling pages for everyday life.

The houses: the areas of life
Where do your planets fall? A busy house is a central area of your life. An empty house is not a lack: its ruler tells how it works.

The aspects, then the synthesis
Spot the tightest aspects (small orb): they describe your most active inner dynamics. Finally, connect everything: a chart reads like a story, not like a list.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I start when reading a birth chart?
With the Sun, Moon and Ascendant trio. It already gives 70% of the portrait: identity, emotions, the way you approach life. Only then do you add the other planets and the aspects.
How do I know which planet dominates my chart?
Look at the planets close to the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven), those that receive the most aspects, and the ruler of your Ascendant. The majority element and modality also set the overall tone.
What should I do with difficult aspects?
Read them as engines. A square describes a tension between two needs: resolving it means developing a skill. Most successes are built on the chart's squares, not on its trines.
